"Liferay Portal allowed us to quickly build a versatile solution able to meet the various expectations of our clients. Without Liferay, the same software would have required twice as much time and effort to be built." - Bertrand Pinel, Stadup Project Leader

Company Profile

Stadango Inc. is a unique software provider for sport communities created in 2004 in Paris. Stadango's goal is to help sports federations and clubs to accelerate the development of their online management and communication abilities. Stadup.com is a portal designed to manage all activity related to the operation of sport clubs and federations. Stadup allows players, trainers, and staff to manage:

  • Club news
  • Individual members
  • Teams
  • Competition planning
  • Material availabilities
  • Club statistics
  • Club finances
  • Forums

Sold as an ASP and hosted solution, Stadup has already built a community of 150,000 members as of the end of 2005.

Challenges

Stadango's first challenge was to develop a user friendly portal designed for internet beginners. Members of the portal could not be expected to necessarily be web-saavy. Ease of use was a high consideration for the final website, since sports association members cross all generational boundaries.

The second challenge was to ensure that an architecture be chosen to implement new services, both custom and out of the box. The platform needed to be highly customizable but also include enough functionality so that custom development costs could remain minimized.

The third challenge was to build a technical infrastructure ready to scale. It was expected that the Stadup community would be large from the beginning. For example, there are more than 500,000 members in the judo federation.

Resolution

Designed and developed by Ippon Technologies – www.ippon.fr – Stadup is implemented on Liferay Professional 3.x.

Liferay was chosen for :

  • User-friendly look & feel and intuitive user interface
  • JSR-168 portlet architecture allows for standards-compliant development and external component reuse. Extensive Liferay portlet library could be leveraged to reduce custom development costs
  • J2EE technical infrastructure allows for secure, high-availability production environment supporting hundreds of thousands of users

Stadup was delivered “on time, on budget? by Ippon Technologies with a team of 5 people.

The most impressive impact using Liferay had on the project was how Liferay enabled the development team to customize Stadup in hours where a different custom solution would have needed weeks of customization.
