Liferay Portal supports many different application servers and servlet containers. Liferay Portal Enterprise requires a fully compliant J2EE application server whereas Liferay Portal Professional can run in a simple servlet container. If you need to build EJBs, use Liferay Portal Enterprise; otherwise, it is highly recommended that you use Liferay Portal Professional. The source code and JavaDoc API is identical in both versions.
